Q & A with Bob Ewing

Bob Ewing is a father, husband, letterer and Art Director in Indianapolis. He’ll be at Slover Library in Norfolk on May 12 to provide a workshop about his process of hand-lettering, The Process of Lettering, followed by a free lecture, Always Be Learning. We recently sat down with Bob to talk about his work as a hand-letterer, some of his favorite projects, and why it’s never too late to learn something new.

There are still a few spots left for both of Bob’s programs – so register today!

How did you get started as a designer and letterer?
I got my associates degree in Visual Communications at Ivy Tech Community College and then my first job was as a Graphic Designer at small digital print shop. As for lettering, I started that in September of 2014. That is when I decided to dedicate some time each day to practice. I got tired of wishing that I could hand-letter and started to do something about it.

What are some of your favorite projects you’ve worked on?
That’s a tough question, I really enjoy a lot of the projects that I work on. But some of my favorites are probably the Creative South t-shirts/logo, E3ers lettering, Elephant3 logo, the Draplin University and most definitely Inch x Inch.

What is one good habit that every designer should have?
Sketching. In my opinion it all starts with a sketch, in fact lots of sketches.

What do you hope people will take away from your workshop and presentation?
I really hope people will realize that it is never too late to learn something new.

How can we follow your work and get in touch with you?
